I’m just your average guy who has a Love for Christian Hip-Hop. I have truly agreed to use my life and music to glorify God. I am a Lansing, Michigan native that developed a love for music at an early age from my mother and grandmother, a kid who grew up singing Andre Crouch songs every Sunday in church, but also absorbed Hip Hop sounds of the 90s from artists like Outkast, UGK, Scarface, Goodie Mob, Pete Rock, Hi TeK, Wu Tang Clan and many others. Everybody had their own style and feel when they came out.  With me coming from the Midwest, I listened to everything from Jazz to Gospel. Albums that really inspired me were Kirk Franklins God’s Property, Cross movements Holy Culture, and Da T.R.U.T.H.s Moment of Truth. I miss that feeling albums like that gave me.  Being a producer/composer has always been in my blood. Having fond memories of being in third grade and getting sent to the hall for beat boxing and pencil drumming on the desk during class.  I picked up producing to maintain my salvation. I was in my room in college one day and I sincerely made a decision to give my life to Christ. Inspired to create music that will touch all people and give them an instrument to give praise to God he was introduced to fruity loops and it changed my life forever.  I realized I had a tool to make my own music. I didn’t have to buy another secular CD ever again. I moved to the city of Flint to pursue a graduate degree in Civil Engineering and started producing and composing for local artists in the city of Flint. I utilized my church F.W.C.C.I. As a testing ground for my production talent.  I rarely use the same drums and sounds – at the end of the day I just make beats that I like. I am just blessed that people seem to like the same things I do. With the establishment of my production company, Freelight Productions, and a growing musical palette of singles garnering strong radio support, I hope to be into the elite circle of CHH beat crafters. Receiving a Stellar award for production on Trip Lee’s award winning album “Between Both Worlds” was the icing on the cake. So many artists feel that they have to have an up tempo anthem, and a few radio tracks to make an album successful, I want to create music that inspires people from all generations and all cultures to give God praise. Allow artists to go beyond the boundaries of current Gospel and Christian Hip-Hop music. God has given me a vision to make a way so that everyone in the world will be able to receive the word of God because of how it is delivered and young people will be able to praise God instead of not being able to relate to God through traditional church music.

I’m kinda the unsung hero. You won’t see me in the videos dancing, I’m like a hobbit J Dilla. I’m trying to break out of that though.

Marv

Ok ok lol. You where responsible for one of Lecrae’s biggest songs. I know the story but can you tell the readers how that beat came about?

Dfree

Now that is a good story.
My little brother Devon Burroughs was on his way to Chicago School of Art(video game designer) full ride scholarship and I wanted to help put some money in his pocket and send him off good. Me and him collabed on a beat he came up with the synths it sounded like Sonic the Hedgehog part 3 at first……LOL I re arranged some things took some synths out and added the drums I was a real HUUUUGE “Twista” “Crucial Conflict” “Bone thugs n harmony” fan back then so I was trying to make a beat that someone like them could spit on. I knew it was only a matter of time when someone from CHH would break that style in. After months, and months and months off shopping the beat to local cats in Flint, Detroit, Lansing…..nooooo one could rip it I was at my wits end I knew the beat was coooold but I was down to selling the beat for $50 just to get rid of it. Just then My little my little brother heard that LeCrae was going to be in Kalamazoo, MI. preaching. I thought preaching?? Ok I will check him out so we drove 2 hours to go hear him preach. He spoke about being like sheep and described the life of a sheep very well and I remember thinking this dude isn’t a rapper he is a farmer…..LOL Anyway after he preached it was crazy it was like nobody really knew REALLY!! who this guy was NOOO BODY was talking to him he was posted up on the wall by himself  (those days are looong gone) so my brother said hey let’s go talk to him and get to know him so we did he is a cool dude. So LeCrae asked me “Do you sing”? I was like NAAAAWW!! then he asked “Do you spit”? I was like I’m cold on beatboxing but not rapping. Then he asked “Do you make beats”? I replied I just started with FL studio a year ago. He was like “SWEET”!!! YO GIVE ME A CD WITH SOME BEATS ON IT IM ON MY WAY TO HOUSTON I HAVE NOOOO BEATS TO WRITE TO COME ON!!! Honestly I was hesitant to give him my ooooonly beat CD that I had in the ride and If I gave it to him we would be riding 2 hours with no music. My little brother nudged me and said “Fool give him the CD” I gave it to him and I had my phone number as a tag on every beat. He called instantly and was like “YO!!!! ARE YOU SIGNED WITH SOMEONE?? DEF JAM, RAPALOT, LAFACE,any of them?? I replied naaaaaw man I’m trying to destroy them!! He was like MY MAAAN!!! That is when he got “Indwelling Sin” off of that CD. He is sooooo awsome because he took that same CD and passed it to Trip, Tedashii, Tonic, and R Swift and all of them picked something off of that 1 CD. Then LeCrae calls me up 1 day before he has to turn in the “Rebel” project to get mixed, mastered, pressed and shipped and says “YO!! I need you like never before I DO NOT HAVE A SINGLE for Rebel give me the craziest unorthodox style beat you have right now. I was like ok I got it no prob relax. I sent him the beat me and my brother worked on that I was about to sell to a local for $20 and that birthed DWYL. He called back like OMG!!!! I can’t stop writing I just came up with 9 verses worth of stuff!! I got Cam here to sing the hook but I will cram all this together in this one song I’m just going to have to rap fast. Till this day no one ever knew that he recorded mixed and mastered a Mp3 that I had sent. He didn’t even have time for me to send the track outs. I was sooooo scared I was going to look crazy but he turned that song into a classic. My brother got a royalty check every 3 months while he was in college. God bless LeCrae he was used by God. It happened so fast My Myspace page went on overload. I closed down the page in panic because I wasn’t expecting to be a star, I wasn’t trying to be that. Till this day I will read the comments on youtube for the song and get excited because people will say “this song changed my life” or “He spit so hard on that” they say anything about the beat or the producer and I’m fine with that. I got paid and God is exalted that’s all that matters. That song was soooo epic I could talk all night on the offers I got and everything else.

Marv

So Lecrae only had the mp3?

Dfree

Yup, they mixed the stank out of it……lol

Marv

Wow! Nobody would have not even known that… That’s Crazy!  Ok. You have musicians that you work with too right?

Dfree

Yes, I have a bass player, guitar player, my homie plays the chords on the piano and organ (I just do ad libs and patterns) I just picked up a live drummer last week.

Marv

Word. So whats the process with working of them on one beat?

Dfree

It’s a assembly line process. I start off with a cut up sample or a synth pattern put some FL studio drums on it, then pass it to my homie to play the chords, then I pass it to my bass player, then I pass it to my guitar player and now if I am not feeling the drums I put on there I can pass the beat to my drummer and he can put live drums on there. I am right next to each of them when they play.

Marv

Ok. So you would say you have a productions company?

Dfree

Yes indeed, I pay all my players up front they work for hire for me.

Marv

Do you use live instrumentation in all your songs?

Dfree

Naaaaw, that get’s costly. Flip it every now and then I sample some records and make beats, trap, or dubstep it here and there.

Marv

No doubt. So with the success with Reach early on what have you been up to lately?

Dfree

After I got with Reach I gained respect among small independent CHH artist and labels and they have pulled on me so now I am really helping them out. Which was originally my plan was to help the little guys it just so happened that at the time Reach were little guys. Also I am on to another chapter in my music I am working with Christian singers now. Get ready for the return of Michelle Bonilla and DFREEEEEE

Marv

No doubt fam. Any last words for the readers?

Dfree

Gods will is great in all of us. Gods will for your life is just as important as what God’s will is for the Pastor, Usher, greeter, Musician, Producer, Rapper, or Singer. The tighter you are with God the tighter your craft will be. Seek God first. DFREEEEEEEEEEE

Marv

No doubt. Thx fam for chopping it up with me bro.

Dfree
