Featured Producer of the month Alex Medina

Marv
Alex what up my mang?

Alex
Doing well bro! Getting in from work. I work a couple of hours a week running sound for different events on campus.
Serving wherever I can be of use.

Marv
Ok, ok I’m the head Sound Tech at my Church lol. I guess most producer work in that field at church.

Alex
Yes! At times people assume because I work with music in the studio setting I can work live. There is some truth to that but live sound is another beast.

Marv
Mang you telling me! Everything is isolated in the studio but everything wiiiiiide open a in live setting.
Tell the readers who Alex Medina is.

Alex
Exactly….I really want to get out of the habit of explaining who I am by what I do. But I am first and foremost a disciple of Jesus Christ. My identity is wrapped up in his life death and resurrection. Second a husband to my beautiful wife Eli. A son to Alex & Ligia Medina.. a brother to six sisters lol

Marv
That’s right you got married recently, Praise God. And that’s a lot sisters. I bet you never got a chance to get in the bathroom lol.

Alex
Nope and we had 2 bathrooms growing up.

Marv
Lol. I do feel you on getting out of the habit of explaining who you are, but for those who may not know who Alex is musically. Tell the people what you do and who you have blessed to co-labor in CHH.

Alex
When I’m asked that different lol Well, I started producing about 7 years ago? (its all a blur lol) A group of my friends from church had strong desires to serve Jesus through music but we didn’t have any tracks. So I began using FL Studio. Of course the stuff wasn’t great but I continued to subject it to Jesus and he allowed me to progressively get better. I then joined the ministry Truce under Nicky Cruz Outreach. When I arrived at the first rehearsal I knew that this was what the Lord was calling me to. I was around young, urban, people like me who also wanted to use music to glorify the Lord and we get to travel with Nicky Cruz under director David Ham. So, I served with Truce for about 4-5 years. During that time we released an album entitled, The Refuge. I did a good amount of the production and rapped on number of songs as well.

Alex
One day This’l hit me up on myspace after hearing some of the work I was doing. He was working on Chronicles of an X-Hustler ..we worked on Picture on a Shirt and Im a Rider ..he passed my name on to Flame.. Json..
During that same time I was building a relationship with DJ Official so he passed my name on to Phanatik.. and the rest it history
then all the reach stuff came after lol that’s a whole another essay lol.

Marv
Lol nah mang its all good famo. I love to hear to how God allows us to be his servants and allows us to change lives thru music.
How long have you been Saved?

Alex
At a young age I made a profession of faith but it wasn’t til the end of freshman year of high school that I understood all the implications of the gospel and began to live in repentance. So when the actual regeneration of my heart happened I am not sure. I just know that I desired Jesus… I wanted God not just the things he can give me but himself . Fellowship with him is what I wanted above all. Growing up in a home where my mother was a believer and my father wasn’t (still isn’t) I saw that I would run to Christ.. get me cues about manhood from him.. spent long hours digging in my word.

Marv
Praise God bruva.
I recently went Fl’s website and seen they did they an interview on you for being a user of their instrument. How did that feel for them to want to interview knowing you’re a believer?

Alex
Amazing thing about that was that my faith was never an issue. They just liked the music I was putting out. Currently I am sponsored by them so they are great to work with. (Im not just saying that lol) When they first asked me to answer these questions for the interview I knew that I was going to have major access to non Christians and it would be a great chance for me to share what I do and how my faith informs all that I do.

Marv
Amen!!! And IMO it was a opportunity to let non believers hear that we are not wack lol REAL TALK!

Alex
Haha yea man.

Marv
A couple nights ago I seen some tweets and from some one other Producers (all in fun) going in on Fruity Loops. I have never used Fl but I know it’s a force to be working RECKING with. 9th Wonder was producing award winning songs with it. BTW congrats on the Grammy Nomination. Tell me what’s the misconception people have with Fl.

Alex
‘
Thanks bro. First of all it still hasn’t shed its original name Fruity Loops. So when people hear that they think Fisher Price started making beat software. Second the stock sounds it brings aren’t the best. But Its flexability and ease of use is what drives it.
I use loads of Vsts and create my own drums. The sequencer is at the heart of the software.

Marv
Ok what vst’s you use?

Alex
Should I let them out the bag? lol
Right now im on that Komplete 7 tip. So new tracks you will hear from me will have a big orchestral sound. Strings.. Brass .. Choir.

Marv
My Mang! That is what I’ve been using the last 5 months or so. Ain’t the sounds big dude!

Alex
Yes! yes and yes

Marv
I’m a propellerhead myself but, I CANNOT FRONT I love K7 lol

Alex
I wish they had better synths
but instrumentation is great
Also use Adventus 1.5
and one more that will go unnamed for a bit
lol

Marv
Yeah I wish they had better synth but, I have not heard any other strings that can touch theirs.
Few more questions dude.

Alex
Yea broo thats cool.

Marv
In your years of producing have you had to encounter any prideful producers and whats your take on producers competing for album placements, etc?

Alex
Oh most definitely.. matter of fact he lives me. He go by Alex Medina. Its a constant positioning my self under the cross and having a community of people around me that care for my soul. Its a common struggle. Naturally we all want to make much of ourselves.
As for placements. Competition is a good thing. It glorifies God but, can be a means to sin. When we compete with each other we sharpen each other. The Artist gets the hotter beat and we grow as producers and in our craft. the problem comes when we desire by above all even at the expense of love for our brother to get a placement.

Alex Medina
Rejection on an album may at times be a gift of grace from God to use to soften our hearts and weed out pride.

Marv
I agree iron does sharpen iron and yessir it is a constant battle within ourselves with pride. I recently encountered a situation with another producer and I was shocked dude. But at the same time it was a self checked for me too. Thank God for grace.

Alex
I recommend the book Business for the Glory of God by Wanye Grudem.
It is a small book but shows how profit, competition, unequal positions of property glorify the Lord
but also shows how they can be a means to sin

Marv
Bet i’ma have to cop that. How do you prioritize your time with everything you got going on?

Alex
At the moment my wife and I have set aside Friday for being the main day that I do all my music work. Because I am in school that takes up most of my time. Also While i am in school i just work on a select number of projects.
Although discipline is still an area I must grow in I have seen Jesus at work.
One of the easiest things easiest for me to forsake is my secret life with Jesus, through prayer and bible intake.
So I must make sure that is constantly my priority

Marv
Wheeew smh, dude that’s the one there kid. A constant battle for me. From being a husband, father of 7, Youth minister, sound man,to full time producing, and still got to make the relationship with the Father first priority. I do feel you fam.

Alex
7?! GOODNESS!
Praise the Lord!
lol

Marv
Yeah dude 6 boys and a girl lol! So i’m alway grinding dude lol!
Any last words to some inspiring producer that maybe reading this?

Alex
Yea man. Don’t forsake your time in the word, prayer and community as you spend more time in front of a computer or whatever you use. Those other things are infinitely more valuable. Also, be patient dont expect so much so soon. You will be constantly frustrated and bitter if you dont get what u expected.

Alex
Lastly perfect your craft.

Marv
Any shout outs?

Alex
Too many people to shout out lol!

Marv
