Swoope! What up my dude?

Swoope

Cooling out broham, taking it day by day.

Marv

I can dig it bruh. First off thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to get up with me.

Swoope

No problem.

Marv

For those that may not know who you, can you tell the readers who you are and what you do?

Swoope

Cool, yea my name is Swoope, I am an artist on Collision Records, 1/4 of the group WLAK. Rapper, Producer, Songwriter, Musician. I try to do a little of everything.

Marv

No doubt. How did you start producing?

Swoope

I’ve been playing keys/organ/piano for my church since I was 15. Producing kinda flowed pretty naturally as the “next step” out of that in 2003. Church gave me a good base and understanding of all instruments, not just piano. Good foundation to start producing on.

Marv

Yeah mang I’m a drummer myself. Can you tell the readers some of artist you’ve produced for?

Swoope

Yessir. Trip Lee, This’l, Da Truth, Stephen the Levite, Christon Gray, Alex Faith, Dre Murray, Sho Baraka, High Society. Thats all the CHH cats….and then a host of Gospel artists as well. And all of my stuff as well haha.

Marv

Yeah mang the first time I heard about you was the A.I.R mixtape which I still listen to.

Swoope

Whoa throwback! Yea that project was fun bro. A lot of my earlier stuff, there was a freedom of creativity there. No label/platform pressures. Just making music out of sheer fun and creativity. Good times.

Marv

That Time Is The Teacher flip you did was crazy.

Swoope

Appreciate that man. Mad fun sampling a lot of that stuff. Wansel is one my favorites. Its crazy, cats wasn’t really hip to that one in particular until Justice League sampled it for Rick Ross. Now, when cats hear it they are like “Swoope sampled that Ross” haha. I’m like, naw son….Dexter Wansel been classic way before that.

Marv

Yeah I know you flipped it before they did. Crazy!

Swoope

Yessir, no shade to them… because that beat was crazy as well.

Marv

What do you use for producing?

Swoope

Logic 9, a gang of plug ins, and a Yamaha Mo8X,a computer and a keyboard lol.

Marv

Sweet. How did you link up with Wit?

Swoope

The initial contact was through Him and Dre’s project “Hells Paradise”. They reached out to me to do a verse for a joint called “Switch Me up”. That was cool. After that, he mixed my project “Wake Up” and we kept in contact after that. Then obviously, he signed on as the A&R for Collision. So our communication has moved from artist to producer to brothers. I spend a gang of time at his house with his wife and family. We just click, man. He is one of the most talented producers I know and all of that flows out of his character. Love that dude.

Marv

Yeah Wit is a dope dude. I’ve been knowing him for a while now.

Swoope

Yessir. Real solid dude. Nothing but good things to say about him, his life, and his work.

Marv

What is your process in making a beat.

Swoope

Feeling is priority. I don’t have a formula, like I always start with drums or I always start with a sample. Whatever moves my soul, whatever I feel is what I start with. That could be some random vocal samples, a rich Fender Rhodes, a dope percussion loop, a breakbeat, a dope chord structure…whatever feels good is the start. After that, I try to stay organic. What pairs good with this sound I’m fooling with right now. Then the building process starts. Additions, subtractions…its all about space man. I’m still learning, but I definitely don’t have a set in stone formula. I never want to box the music into what I think is the best way to do things. Thats when you start making cookie cutter, limited, anybody can do this type of music.

Marv
Ok, Ok. What’s your take on using construction  loops?

Swoope

Like progressive house stuff? Or loops in general?

Marv

Loops in general. The reason I’m asking is every producer doesn’t know how to play keys so they may buy some piano loops and build around it.

Swoope

I love loops. A lot of stuff you guys hear from me is built around loops. Songs like “Long Way Down” on WLAK, “Fantasy” on Wake Up.loops man. I have no problem with them, a lot the High Society stuff was built on loops. Use what you have to get what you want. No shame in my game bro hah.

Marv
Yeah mang for some reason it’s like some kind of taboo in CHH. I use loops as well. Some of them joints just inspire the heck out of me make something crazy.

Swoope
Man a lot of the big boys use loops too. Timbaland, Swizz, a lot them use loops. They are at our disposal for a reason….TO USE THEM.

Marv

Agreed. What’s your thoughts on leasing beats?

Swoope

I’ve never fully understood the concept honestly. Just buy the dag gone beat haha. But I know a lot cats that eat good off of leasing beat. Its not my thing, but….power to the people. [BRG id=”7″]

Marv

Not mine either. So what can we expect from you in the future.

Swoope

Working tough on Christon Grays record. I think its gonna be amazing. Then I am for sure dropping my next album in 2014 and also another “special” project that I think the people are going to enjoy. Wanna blow 2014 wide open.
Marv

Mang, I just told Wit I want to a part of his album. He told me he is very picky on who he works with. Lol

Swoope

Extremely. He’s a producer himself on top of being a talented singer/songwriter/rapper. So he knows exactly what he wants.

Marv

No doubt. Any last words for the readers?

Swoope

Be confident in it. Influences are inevitable, but find you in the sea of constant influences. If thats in production, singing, rapping, shoot….even non-music related stuff. The Lord created one you, on purpose and in purpose. Seek Him, find the voice that He’s given you and speak boldly with it. I’m learning that myself via production. There’s a clear and heavy Kanye/No ID influence in my production, but I don’t want to get stuck there. I want cats to hear Swoope. The voice the Lord has given me.

Marv

Amen bruh. I appreciate you chopping it up with me dude.

Swoope

No problem bruh. Was mad fun.

Marv

Grace and peace.
