Whats going on Cephas! I appreciate you taking the time out to do this!

Cephas
No prob! My pleasure.

OL
Could you tell the readers who you are and what you do?

Cephas
Sure, my name is Matt Dzurilla but I also go by Cephas. I run a record label and ministry called Go! Records which allows me to use my creative gifts producing and writting music to share the gospel.

OL
How long have you been at it producing?

Cephas
Ive been producing music for 10 years now.

OL
Music has changed obviously in the past ten years. How did you get into producing back then and who would you say are you’re musical influences?

Cephas
I started as a Dj actually. (At this point I wasnt saved). Spinning and scratching records at house parties. Then I got my own radio show in Cleveland. Strated working with concert promoters to get major artists on my show like Common, Murs, MC Lyte, Guru (From Gangstar), etc. Then in the middle of all that I get saved. I realized I could no longer be spinning records glorifying sex, drugs, and violence….So I decided to change the show to a Christian hip hop format.

Well the station didn’t like that and so they dropped my show! (Even though it was the number 1 show on the station). I was heart broken and asked God why it all went down like that….and He spoke to me during prayer time and said “Ive called you to make records not just to spin them.” That blew my mind because I never thought I’d make records. Shortly there after I met a guy who was a well known producer and he turn me onto Reason (like the very first version of it lol). I got hooked from that day forward!

My early influences production wise were Pete Rock, Just Blaze, j-Dilla, Madlib, Dj Shadow and Dj Premier. But now my influences have switched up and are more dubstep oriented. Now I’m more into artists like Zeds Dread, Chase and Status, Skrillex, Pretty Lights and Glitch Mob. I could go on and name about another 20 artists I’m heavily influenced by but I guess those are the main ones lol.

OL
Its crazy to me how you were once spinning records and having those artists around to now doing all that for the Lord! Those guys are still my influences production wise too. Who have you worked with in christian hip hop?

Cephas
God is good. I’ll tell ya what..it was hard for me to give up secular hip hop…really hard. Beacuase I was such a big fan of the music. But when I did He blessed me! So it was worth it! 😉 Thus far I’ve been blessed to have Bizzle, Eshon Burgundy, Bumps Inf, Datin, K-Drama, Yaves, D-Maub, Selah The Corner, Lavosiar and Mac the Doulos all rock over my tracks.

OL
What equipment do you use to produce?

Cephas
Mixture of software and hardware. I enjoy Reason and Native Instrumnets Komplete, but also my mpc and midi controllers. I love sampling so I have to include my record collection as part of my equipment 😉 Guess I should list me turntables. Technique SP 1200’s.

OL
I love Native Instruments products. I have noticed that you are a sample guy over the tracks I’m aware you produced. There’s just something about digging and finding them loops and hearing the crackle of the vinyl! Whats your process in the studio?

Cephas
Yessir! It depends if I’m sampling or not. 50% of beats have samples and the other 50% are composed. If I’m sampling it usually starts with the sample. I find what I want to and chop it…then find the drums. Then everything falls into place after that. If I’m composing the beat…it usually starts with the mood I’m feeling at the time. If I’m upbeat than that will reflect in what I make. If I’m feeling ambitious…then Ill make something that sounds like theme music for a prize fighter to walk into the ring to lol….it just depends.

Now a days my schedule is tight so I’m way more intentional with what I create. If I create something new it usually serves a purpose…either its a beat for a song I’m writing…or a beat specifically for another artist upon their request.

OL
I love sampling and making music from scratch. Love both worlds! Any artists you would want to or plan on working with?

Cephas
For sure! I cant decide which I like better lol! Really focusing on myself right now since I’ve been focused for producing for other artists for so long. I’m about to drop my debut record and I made all the beats for it so I’m super stoked about that. But I’m sure opportunities will continue to come up so I’ll just play it by ear as they do. Been working with Datin on his new record..and that about to be a heater! So I’m stoked for that to drop. It would be dope to work with the Reach crew. With the way things are going I could see that happening in the near future.

OL
Thats dope! Is that what we can expect from you in the future? Or is there more you have planned?

Cephas
Yeah….really been focused on the solo stuff this last year. And as far as reach goes…only time will tell 😉 I’ve got an instrumental album dropping in July called Cephstrumentals Vol. 1. It will feature some beats from work I’ve done with other artists as well as exclusive instrumentals from my vault. Pretty stoked about it.

OL
Cephstrumentals lol like Petestrumentals ahaa but yeah Cephas thanks a lot for chopping it up with me. This was great!

Cephas
Haha yeah like Petesrtumentals! That was my influence 😉 and thanks so much Omar. Appreciate the love!
