Marv
All is well fam. Working hard. How you been?

Chris
Been doing great. God is good. Expecting my 3rd girl. So I’m excited

Marv
Oh wow congrats bro.

Chris
Thanks my man! I know you can relate lol!

Marv
Man you already know! For the readers that are reading, can you tell them who you are and what you do?

Chris
I’m an entrepreneur and I do music production through JahRock’n Productions.

Marv
Now doubt. A lot has been going on since our last interview. What’s been going on over at JahRockin?

Chris
We’ve been busy working with a lot of budding developing artist. We’re excited about this.
Angie Rose, D-Will, Kei-Landa ,Sheena Lee, Naomi Ruth a budding Gospel Singer as well.

Marv
Ok. I see you guys work with a lot of females artists.

Chris
Yea bro, not by choice. I guess that’s Gods design. I think it’s about time they have a platform

Marv
You know it’s funny because that was my next question. What was the reason for that.

Chris
Yea I think it’s Heesun Lee.

heesun-lee

Once people saw we knew how to work with a female in this genre. I think other ladies got comfortable. They just need someone to believe they can be successful in this genre.

Marv
That’s dope bruh. Giving them a comfort zone to work in.

Chris
Absolutely.

Marv
You are one of the few functioning production studios in the genre. In this economy, how are you maintaining? How are able to keep the team working?

Chris
Jesus and I have a committed team. They have bought into the vision. It’s their vision. We create an economy for ourselves. We understand the demand for quality music. We find artist that don’t have opportunities or resources. And we empower them. Therefore creating an economy where there is none. I’m done chasing the big artists. The’ll find is when they need us. I can’t support my kids by running behind what’s hot. We create what’s hot.

Marv
Man I stop chasing that carrot a long time ago as well. What are some other things you guys are doing to stay afloat?

Chris
Well we also offer different parts of the production process as one-off services. Like: Songwriting, Beats, Recording, Mixing, Mastering. Our studio is a fixture in the NYC CHH scene.

Marv
How many people are on your production team?

Chris
We have 6 producers. Chris Belmont, Edy Magic, DJ-XRAY, E Keys, Keynote , and Super Duper.PhotoGrid_1435508225791

Marv
Dope fam. Do you guys work with secular artists?

Chris
Yeah we do but they have to match our world view. You can sing love songs with a biblical world view. We’re down with that.

Marv
I think artist of like Christian Grey that does love songs in that manner. Seeing that are you open to working with secular artists. That’s been a big topic in the genre. What’s your outlook on the matter? Do you and your team sit and dialogue about the subject?

Chris
Yes every opportunity we get we talk about it and discuss whether we want to move forward with that. It’s really a case-by-case basis. I have situations where we allowed ourselves to work with touchy subjects and it allowed us to share the gospel with particular artist that probably would never hear it in that type of setting. Sometimes it changed their outlook on the song. We use our platform to impact people far from God.

Marv
Now that’s dope fam. Being able dialogue and being witness on the artists. Have you guys witness any of the artist giving their life to Christ after sharing the gospel with them?

Chris
Yes definitely! I’ve seen on a couple of occasions where overtime they were impacted by the culture that they saw and the convictions followed afterwards. It’s a beautiful thing man.

Marv
Awesome dude. I guess reason I’m asking is because, from the outside looking in, we really don’t know what’s taking place in those type of settings. Now what sucks in my opinion is when you just look at as just a job and don’t look for the opportunity to share.

Chris
Yeah bro I feel you. For us it’s all about the opportunity to share. The culture that we have created over here allows us to work very closely with the artist on all phases of the music creation. We don’t just sell beats to me that’s not real production that’s just buying a bag of chips from the store. That gives us the opportunity to build a relationship with people. From all walks of life that want to do music.  Music is just a medium in which we choose to share the gospel. Just another way to build relationship with people. If you ask me what’s the most important part of my job that’s the relationships we create on the way. The music is secondary.

Marv
You mentioned earlier that you do artist development. What goes into that process bro?

Chris
Sure, we pretty much assess where the artist is in their career and we take them through a six week program that teaches them about the industry. You can go to school to learn about production and engineering but there really isn’t a school to learn how to be a good professional artist. Many people focus on the artist town but there’s so much more that goes into being an artist.

Marv
So education is key?

Chris
Absolutely. You got to know the game before you play it.

Marv
Going through that process, when it’s all said and done. Do the artists get it?

Chris
Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. Some people can learn from the front and but some people need to learn from the back end. Experience sometimes is the best teacher.

Marv
Man I think that’s great what you’re offering. What can we be expecting from JahRockin in the future?

Chris
More music for your artist I hope. We’re trying our best to become a machine. We’re not there yet but we are fine tuning some of our process. We have a record label that we also have invested in called “In My City Records”. Looking forward to putting out an artist by the name of D Will.

Marv
