Marv

First of all, thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule bro.

Promote

No problem. Glad to be here.

Marv

Where are you from fam?

Promote

Im originally from San Angelo, TX. Its in the middle of no where lol. Its literally in the center of Texas! I moved to Dallas a few years ago but have recently moved out to Nashville, TN for a little while.

Marv

How long have you been a DJ?

Promote

I always say 15 years so let me really think it through. I started when I graduated high school so yea thats about right I guess.

Marv

How did you get into DJ?

Promote

As a kid I use to watch MTV and I remember seeing Herbie Hancock and also around 3rd grade YO MTV Raps. To see guys using turntables was crazy. I remember hearing DJs on the radio mixing top 40 too. It was a nationally syndicated show and I could tell that they were playing two distinctively different songs. I didn’t know any DJs so I gravitated more towards breakdancing. As I got older I learned how to do graffiti art as well. It wasn’t until I graduated high school and I could travel more that I meet two DJs from Dallas Texas. They had their own setup of Technics and did house parties. I got to run with them for awhile and slowly picked it up.

Marv

What Artists have you toured with?

Promote

Oh man! A ton! I don’t really consider it “touring” but Ive DJed for a ton of friends. Lets see… Man of War, Knowdaverbs, Red Cloud, Kaboose, Dirt, Propaganda, Theory Hazit, B.Reith, Moses Uvere, KJ-52, Tedashii, Lecrae… theres probably a ton more.

Marv

Wow that’s a major lineup. How has the experience been touring with Chris Tomlin?

Promote

It was great! I learned a lot. I had forgotten that what I was doing as a DJ was “worship”. I use to tell myself that it was an act of worship but when you DJ for a lot of rap artists its easy to just see it as something you do to share the Gospel. I had recently adopted that idea of throwing “parties” or celebrations but touring with Chris really showed me how much of a worshipper I am. I feel that what I do as a DJ fits more in the lines of “leading worship” that anything else. They loved having me open up each night we all formed some really good relationships. It was an honor to be a part of something so huge like that.

Marv

How did that opportunity come about?

Promote

I was djing a teen conference and one of the production guys who runs Chris Tomlin’s tours introduced me to Chris. I didn’t know who he was but him and Louie were at the event and got to see me build up energy before the bands hit the stage. They really loved it I guess. Later on in the year I got a Facebook message asking me if I wanted to tour with them. The crazy thing is that earlier around March God was already showing me something big was going to happen. The closest thing I could think of was that it would be touring with a big artist. I figured that since I had already thought that idea it was probably not gonna that lol. But when I got the message on Facebook in November I was like “Man God!!! Thats was it!”

Marv

In your down time when you not touring. Do you practice?

Promote

There actually hasn’t been much down time. The touring and travel take up a lot of that. Since events are happening every week Im usually just prepping for the next one. That ends up being your practice. Creating new stuff for each event and thinking about what would be new and exciting for people to hear.

Marv

What’s a day like for you when preparing for an event?

Promote

Depends. If we are flying then a lot of packing. My wife helps out a lot and tours with me most the time. We pack up merchandise, dj equipment. Im usually digging for music online before I leave and working out the bookings. After we land somewhere Im fully immersed in the event. Meeting people, hanging, getting things together. I try and smash it every time I get a chance to DJ somewhere so that takes a lot of prep work. Its about creating an experience for people that will change their lives.

Marv

What’s next for you bro?

Promote

I just moved to Nashville. The main reason was to help with these tours. Most the tour busses leave from Nashville so it makes it easier to live close. Im helping Lecrae and Derek Minor on the Winter Jam tour at the start of the year. It runs Jan 3 – March 30. Im also working on a DJ collective called TableTurners. A lot happening with that. I got a couple music things Im trying to launch as well but I don’t wanna share too much. Just know Im trying to put out a lot of new content in 2014. I feel that its gonna be an amazing year!

Marv

Any last words for the readers?

Promote

Yea just thanks to everyone who’s been supporting all these years. Ive gotten a lot of love from people. I see other artists getting hated on for expanding and growing so its refreshing to see all these DJ’s supporting and everyone just being so down for this. Check out the website for free music and thanks for letting me do this interview bro!
