Interview With Dj Redeem

OL

What up Dj Redeem! Thank you for getting with me to do this!

Dj Redeem

Word! Thanks for reaching out brother!

OL

Can you tell the readers who you are and what you do?

Dj Redeem

Quincy Torres aka Dj Redeem. I’m from the Merrimack Valley area that is located about a half hour north of the city of Boston, Mass. What do I do? Wow.. for those who know me, know that I wear many hats. First and formost a servant of the most high Jesus Christ.  I’m a blessed husband to my wife Jade and father to two girls Alexandra and Elena. I work in the field of youth work and law enforcement along with serving at my church Granite United Church as a resident Dj and communications team.

OL

How long have you been dj’ing for?

Dj Redeem

Officially, I would say since 2009 as “Dj Q” and rebranded to “Dj Redeem” as of 2012.

OL

How did you get into dj’ing? Who are you influences in music?

Dj Redeem

I grew up a bboy, my mom and uncle were heavy in the scene in the city of Lawrence, Ma when they were in their teens and my mom would always talk about it and taught me the basics and I ran with that through high school.

I was fascinated with the idea of being a DJ when I first saw Dj Skribble on MTV and then started to listen closely to other Djs on my radio like Funk Flex, Dj Roy Barboza, Clinton Sparks and mixtapes by Dj Clue. I later became a club promoter my freshman year in college and was surrounded by a few local celebrity Djs like Dj Gera, Dj J Styles, and Dj KLow and was able to build relationships and get more in the scene. Mentorship later came from Dj Spindler who really invested in teaching me most of what I know and I now use my craft to serve in the church.

I’ve never thought it was even an option to Dj in a church until Pastors Steve Jesmer and Rory Lawrence of Dialogue Church reached out to me to spin at their Easter services. Sure enough that was the start of my journey as Dj Redeem. Now being the resident Dj for their Easter, Christmas and Halloween services I was now Dj’n at my local church Granite United for Warriors Conference and then our network churches, Journey Church and Riverbank Church and Camp Escape.  It’s truly been a blessing and Im grateful for every one these Lead and youth Pastors for the opportunities!

OL

Dope! Who have you’ve worked with? Tell us about the Kingdom Dj’s collective…

Dj Redeem

The Lord as of recent has created opportunites for me to team up with a few artists from the ACElife crew like Applejaxx, SoVocab and Caleb McCoy who are from Boston. As well with working with Last Ones as we get ready plan out some shows for 2016 and currently have done a show at Kairo’s Lounge with Th3 Saga and Angie Rose that was hosted by Dj SamR of Kingdom Djs in New York.

Kingdom Djs was a vision brought to me in 2013, where I felt the need to form a brand and brotherhood of Djs that shared the same love for Christ and drive to reach their community. We started with five for the first year and started to build a solid core and have grown to eleven as of this year. Our mission is to “to  bring attention to ourselves to bring glory to God through our passion of music.”And we do that by seizing the moments that are given to us as Djs to share the gospel to those that are attracted to our craft. Many of our members serve in their church while others are really involved in their communities and work on local/online radio stations. We are also trying to help promote the indie artists out there by using our platforms to get their music heard. I figured if we have an active team around the country and your able to push an artists song who is from the middle of nowhere like Maine and distribute their project across the country what better way to help a brother/sister in Christ.  Kingdom Djs currently have members in Boston, New Hampshire, New York, Virginia, Texas, Missouri, Gerogia, Iowa, S. Mississippi, California and LA.

OL

That’s crazy to have a network of Dj’s like that! What do you use to cutt the plates?

Dj Redeem

I’m rockin with the Pioneer SX2!

OL

What is your process in the studio or when it comes to making mixes…

Dj Redeem

I’ve released three mixtapes, Walking Dead, Church in the Wild and The Hunger Game. I’d say my process when coming up with my setlist would be to make sure that these are tracks that the youth in my city can relate to and allow room for the Lord to speak to them throughout the project.

I grew up Pentecostal and so the idea of handing out bible tracts has always stuck with me as a young kid (hence me being a club promoter) but I’ve now adopted the idea of creating mixtapes as a modern day “bible tract” not so that I can “be known” but so that the youth in my community can have the opportunity to listen to another style of music that can be life changing. The youth now a days are not going to listen to what you have to say, nor are they going to take a minute to read a bible tract but if we meet them where they’re at and most of the time its with a set a headphones then that  can allow room for dialogue. Plus what kid doesn’t like a free cd of music? lol

OL

Any artist you want to or plan on working with? What would you consider a dream placement?

Dj Redeem

I’d like to start working more with the artists in my area of Boston and host events throughout our state of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. We’re the least church region on the country and if we can break through some barriers and start doing some outreach in our commnunities to reach the youth I’ll be simply happy with that. As for artists in the CHH scene, I’d say Social Club. I’d really like to partner up with them in any capacity!

OL

What can expect from you in the future?

Dj Redeem

Expect? I’m not sure… I’m always coming up with some type of idea or project but I’ll let you in on a something thats just been finalized… April 24th will be the night I launch GRVCE POINT (a touring lounge) platform that will be hosted at Granite United Church with several artists from ACE Life. This will be a ministry to target our University aged indivuals and will be hosting several events  throughout the Merrimack Valley to chowcase artists and share the gospel!

OL

Great! Best of luck with the GRVCE POINT platform! Thanks for chopping it up with me!

Dj Redeem

Thanks for the opportunity, blessing brother!
