Spec! What up my dude?

Spec
All is well, Bro! God is good! How bout you?

Marv
Can’t complain. How was Flavor Fest?

Spec
Flavor Fest was amazing. Got to reconnect with all my friends and acquaintances. Met a lot of new people too. New opportunities. New brothers and sisters. Urban D blessed me with the opportunity to produce and rap in the booth with V. Rose, KJ-52, Braille, Sicily, and more. Beat battle was great! My boy Black Knight was in it. My family, Jam the Hype, had a booth. And OMG… Chris Chicago had a wrestling match! Overall, dope experience.

Marv
Great, fam. For those that may not know, tell the readers where you’re from and how long you have been producing.

Spec
Cool. I’m from Sacramento, Ca. I’ve been producing for about 16 years.

Marv
Married? Kids?

Spec
I’ve got three beautiful children. My oldest is Young Lyfe, an artist. He featured on my single, Madagascar.

Marv
Dope! I remember the first time I heard about you (through Flame). It’s was like you came from out of nowhere and then I see you all over the net. How did that initial meet happen?

Spec
Lol. GOD is good bro. I feel the same way, it’s like, “what just happened?” Lol. First meet: 2009…Flame nominated for a Grammy, I’m in La. with my dude who knew Flame, and we all met up late night. We have Bible study and just plain have good fellowship. Year later, Flame doing a show in Sac, my artist V. Rose sings “Cry Holy” for the altar call. Flame asks someone, “Who is that singing?”  They tell him oh, that’s V. Rose, Spec’s artist. Flame remembered me and was like…well, your Mr. California, huh? Flame was working on “Captured” and needed a radio single. V. Rose and I pitched a record we had done called “Surrender,” and the rest was history. Great relationship.

Marv
Praise God for perfect timing right. Who else have you worked with?

Spec
I’ve been blessed to work with V. Rose, Flame, Lecrae, Json, KJ-52, Group 1 Crew, The Katinas, Derek Minor, December Radio, Thisl, Jai, Trip Lee, KB, Da T.R.U.T.H., Hazakeem, Izreal, Sheena Lee, D-Maub, K-Drama, Viktory, and lots of super talented others, man!

Marv
Wow, mang. Those are a lot of heavy hitters. I remember I first started producing in CHH. I could almost count my colleagues on my hand, lol. Dudes that were before me and afterwards but now there so many talented producers that have hit the scene. How do you stand out from other producers?

Spec
Man, God does all the exalting, but this is what I believe makes me stand apart. I am not just a beat centered guy, I’m a “Quincy Jones/Timbo” type producer. I don’t just record and engineer. I create records out of songs. People bring me words and tracks, and I create records by vocal arranging, track arrangement, post production, instrumentation, etc. We develop a sound and make every song special. Flame calls it the “Spec Experience.”  Lol.

And, you know, that’s very rare in this genre. Even for myself and a lot of artist that I’ve worked… it’s either something I’ve made and sent them or something they have in mind already but not that personal. And I think the machine runs a lil different in CHH. Meaning not a lot of budget to investment in the music, such as flying the producers out to work one on one. So it kinda boils to down to emailing back and forth, skyping, etc. until you get it right you feel me.

Spec
Man, I feel u.  A lot of times I’ll lower my cost so they can fly me out. That extra sauce from personal coaching and relationship is so important to my brand.

Marv
Yeah, I feel you. What’s typical day for you in the studio?

Spec
Man, there is nothing typical about it. It changes from day to day. Lol. One day it’s artist development. Next it might be 8 hours of tuning and editing vocals. Next it’s making a track. Next it’s posting someone else’s track. Last month it was post on Flame’s Royal Flush in Starbucks around the country…now its V. Rose. Never a dull moment.

Marv
No doubt, mang. So what can people be expecting from you in the future?

Spec
Man! Look for my new projects: TC&V Vol 2, trax and my new album coming out next summer. Also, look for V. Rose’s new album, and my new group, Confess and Be Free. And follow @spechouse.

Marv
No doubt, Bro. Any last words?

Spec
God Is amazing. Everything I have done, learned, and that I am, I owe to God. Not taking away anything from my mentors, but God even sent them. When I hear the testimonies of people being helped, or even saved by music I’ve produced…it’s worth it. I pray I get to still do music in Heaven. Thank you, Marv, for thinking of me.

Marv
No Doubt, my dude. Grace and Peace.
