Life! What up fam.

Tru Life
All is well, how about you?

Marv
I’m good bruh. First off thank for taking time out of your schedule to get up with me.

Tru Life
Firstly, I want to apologize to you because we were supposed to do this so much sooner than now. So thank you for having Me you know how we do…

Marv
No doubt. For those who may not be familiar with who Tru Life is, can you tell the readers who you are and what you do?

Tru Life
I am one of the original/founding members of the crossmovent. I am a MC, producer, and engineer. I am also a live sound engineer, and I write code for apps.

Marv
How long have you been producing and engineering?

Tru Life
I started producing and engineering in the mid to late 80’s. Mostly out of necessity because myself and Ambassador needed beats but all we had was in an Alesis 16 B Drum Machine. So what we ended up happening was Ambassador’s DJ bought a six track recorder we an we purchased Digitech Sampler and we went from there.

Marv
Wow! Talk about back in the day. lol. How did you guys start CM as label?

Tru Life
Also, out of necessity. we realized that we wanted to be able to put this on as large a scale as possible. and introduce the culture to Jesus. And the only way that we knew to do that was to create a record label. So that’s what we did. And it worked!
For the historical sake. We were a Ministry who created a label. Just for those who may have a bit of a different view. Lol

Marv
Definitely did bro. I remember when I first became a believer. You guys were the first I heard.

Tru Life
Wow! I didn’t know that! That’s banging!!

Marv
So I imagine you produce for everyone on the roster. How did you transition to the A&R role. But first please explain what is an A&R?

Tru Life
Firstly A&R stands for Artist and Repertoire that is someone who scouts talent as well as help steer talent for record labels. I sort of fell into the position because of my relationships with all of the artists. So it sort of flowed naturally for me and it wasn’t a hard transition in fact it wasn’t really a transition because I was already doing everything that an A&R does for the record label but we needed that office at the label established so I was given the job because I was already doing it. lol

Marv
Lol I know right. I recently did an interview with Fish (Dj Official), and he mentioned that CM disbanded in 2007 and then he moved on to Reach. What happen? A machine that was moving forward that just came to halt?

Tru Life
Well we actually did not disband in 07 it was 09. It it was internal differences that we could not seem to get around. And honestly at that point we had slowed down a good bit. Just based on life. Marriage, kids, we were all soloists who had individual ministries and came together to form CM the group.

Marv
Let’s talk royalties bro. We talked about this yesterday, but can you explain how it works. I think there is a misconception when comes to how artist and producers are to be paid.

Tru Life
I don’t know if I actually have enough time to really explain this LOL.

Marv
Give me the short version lol.

Tru Life
In short royalties are the percentage that you’re given off of sales. There is a publishing royalty for writers and producers. Then there’s a mechanical for physical sales of projects that you receive royalties from. The problem is people don’t know what those percentages should be and what they’re producing and or writing and appearing on projects with people and they have not gained a simple knowledgeable understanding of how this works but let’s be honest there are no real standards in the industry other than a producer is guaranteed 50% as a writer. But again that is negotiable based on who you are dealing with and what you’re dealing with contract wise.

Marv
Ok… For someone that doesn’t knows jack about how it works. What would be a decent deal for a producer.

Tru Life
Still depends on who the artist is, the artist current positioning and so much more. But in short just make sure u get your 50%. NO MATTER WHAT! That will take you much further financially than you think. So it is hard to put down a formula for someone. Sorry but it’s such a broad range you have to consider all the above to make an informed decision. But more than anything if you cannot afford an attorney find someone who knows, REALLY knows industry and get some wisdom before proceeding. DO NOT JUMP OUT THE JET AND THINK YOU CAN FIX IT Later. Not smart at all.

Marv
No doubt. What can we be expecting from you in the future?

Tru Life
Well.. I am halfway through my next project. I am working as we speak with Ambassador on his next joint. Tonic called me and we will be connecting real soon , also Levester White is my right hand man anything I work on he touches also. Just finished a song for my churches all in anthem also. So I’m working. Lol

Marv
Bet. Any advise you want to leave the readers?

Tru Life
Truthfully. I’ve tried to do one thing with my skill. Make sure I keep my desires in check and make sure I focus on what the Lord wants. Which is that we become like Him in all that we do. I know that seems super spiritual but I have kept my heart and mind set on Him and it has worked for 20 plus years. There is something to be said for the person who keeps Christ at the forefront and literally bases life’s decision making on prayer, study and good counsel.

Marv
No doubt. My dude thank you for getting up with me bro.

Tru Life
Marv, I appreciate you bruh. Thanks for the opportunity to share.
